Proximity Card: A Cost-effective Solution for Access Control

Proximity Card is something that we always use, for instance, we use it to open a door to enter a building or office. It is a cost-effective solution for access control. However, what is the proximity card? How does proximity card work? What are the common proximity cards? This article will lead you to figure out it.

What is the Proximity Card?

A proximity card is a non-contact card that exchanges data with a reader through non-mechanical contact. RFID IC cards and RFID ID Cards are both proximity cards. Cardholders can enter the building or a specific area through it.

Proximity Card does not need a special power supply. The chip is encapsulated into it so that it is not easily damaged, durable, and waterproof. Also, the card has no positive and negative sides when using it, easy to use, and fast to operate.

Proximity Cards are commonly used as access cards. For example, the Community access control system and office access control system often use it to control the security of access. Also, it is widely used in security, identification, ticketing, billing, and other applications.

How Does Proximity Card Work?

The proximity card contains a predefined number that is read by a card reader programmed to identify them. The proximity card reader is connected to the access control system panel. Wires transmit energy to the reader and data from the reader to the panel.

The electromagnetic field emitted by the reader is called the “excitation field”. When the proximity card enters the field, the card will absorb some energy from the field. The card converts magnetic energy into electricity so that the electronic circuit on the card can be “opened”. Then its number will be transmitted to the card reader.

The card reader sends the card number to the access control system panel. And then the access control system panel looks up whether the card number is valid in its database and whether it has the right to open the door at this time. If the card is approved, then the control panel sends a signal to the door lock to unlock for a period of time.

What are the Common Proximity Cards?

Proximity cards are mainly divided into two categories: one is contactless IC cards, the other one is contactless ID cards.

Contactless IC Card, also known as RFID Card, consists of chips, antennas, encapsulated in PVC, PET card, or ABS, Epoxy keyfob. There are many kinds of RFID cards, which we explained in detail in another article. » The Most Complete Guide To Custom Smart Cards

A contactless ID Card is a read-only contactless card. The card number is stored in the chip and can only be written once. It can not be changed after sealing the card. The most common forms of proximity cards are shown below.
