You can program a NFC Tag to auto start an app. So, slide your phone into Google cardboard, phone reads the nfc tag and auto launches your favourite vr app. It is neat, but not useful if you have a lot of VR apps installed.
In theory it should allow for automatic configuration for custom (non-Cardboard) headsets (different IPD, focal length, etc.) as an alternative to QR codes. This is actually implemented in Google's updated VR toolkit, but they haven't released any documentation on it so manufacturers don't use this feature yet (as far as I know).
It will be possible for people everywhere to explore virtual reality in a cost effective, easy way.

Using the app trigger, I can easily program these for various functions when I tap them with my nexus 4 phone. So far I have used one to toggle silent/normal volume and one for pairing and unpairing a bluetooth speaker. Both work great. the only thing I'd like better, is if maybe they came in just black or silver, as sometimes you don't want to stick a bright primary colored sticker on a bluetooth speaker. I guess I'd like it better if they were a little more discreet looking.
Grabbed a pack to work with my Galaxy S5 from Verizon. All of the tags programmed seamlessly using the Trigger app. The phone needs to be screen-on and unlocked in order to process the tag when tapped, however this isn't a limitation of the tags as much as the phone.
